Postsecondary Enrollment Option
The Postsecondary Enrollment
Option Act (Chapter 261 C, Iowa Code) was enacted in 1987 to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wider variety
of options to high school students by enabling eleventh and twelfth grade students to enroll part time in nonsectarian courses
in eligible postsecondary institution of higher learning in Iowa.
The student enrolled in
one or more college or community college courses may receive high school and college credit for the course work. Students are responsible for their own transportation and any equipment required for the course, i.e.,
tools, computers, calculators, etc.
I. Student Eligibility
A.
Junior and senior students who
are enrolled in high school.
II. Course Requirements
A.
Students may be required to
meet entrance requirements. Requirements may include prerequisite courses, ACT
scores, or minimum grade point.
B.
Students must take the courses
for credit. They cannot audit a course.
C.
Students may not enroll in a
course if a comparable course is offered at their high school.
D.
Course must be nonsectarian.
III.
Eligible Postsecondary Schools
A.

of eligible schools.
B.
Not all courses offered by these
institutions are eligible for participation in the Act.
IV.
Application Procedures
A.
Students must inform the Ed-Co
administration of their intent to participate.

V. Students will be required to submit a check to the school for $250.
This money will be forfeited if the course is not successfully completed.
The check will be returned to the student when the class is successfully completed.
