Ed-Co students also have
available to them classes that are broadcast over Iowa's fiber optics network. The
courses offered are usually courses that the local school district cannot offer. Students
will earn high school credit for the courses and in some cases college credit can be earned.

Professions and Services
1 semester - 1 credit/semester
Course number: 222
This course provides an
orientation to the people and institutions that make up the health care system. Ways
to meet the communication and interpersonal needs of clients will be covered. Students
will be required to investigate the responsibilities of health care practitioners and the preparation necessary to function
in these roles. A brief overview of anatomy and physiology, human growth and
development, nutrition, medical terminology and pharmacology will be included. This
course is designed for students considering a career in the health care field.
Nurse Aide I/Nurse Aide
II
1 semester - 1 credit/semester
Course number: 218/219
The is course is designed
to provide the knowledge and practical skill necessary to provide care and service to residents in long term care facilities. A clinical rotation is included to provide students with an opportunity to experience
direct care of the patient. Students completing this course will be eligible
to take the state licensure examination for nurse aide certification. The course
requires some weekend and after school hours.
These courses are required
by all colleges as prerequisites to get into the nursing programs.
Medical Terminology

The study of medical terminology
is the language of medicine with emphasis on spelling, pronunciation and usage. This
class is beneficial to all students considering a career in health care. It is
worth four college credits at NICC.
Nutrition
1 semester - 1 credit/semester
Course number: 220
This course emphasizes a
practical knowledge of good nutrition and some knowledge of diet therapy. It
includes a background of adequate and accurate information on basic nutritional needs of the body. It meets most two year nursing program and basic coaching certificate requirements. It is worth two college credits at NICC.
Introduction to Pharmacology
1 semester - 1 credit/semester
Course number: 227
Includes
a review of fractions and decimals, conversions of metric, apothecary and household units, and computations of drug dosages. The classifications of drugs affecting each body system will be an integral part of
this course. This class is designed for students planning on entering a career
in the health care field. It is worth two college credits at NICC.
