that participated included Ed-Co, Starmont, Central Elkader, Clayton Ridge, and Valley of Elgin.
There were ten teams that competed in the tournament: four from Ed-Co, two from both Starmont and
Valley, and one each for Central and Clayton Ridge. Each team had six members, or seven if they had a substitute,
and they all played at least three games. The Ed-Co team of Dakota Lueken, Payson Kerns,
Kevin Fischer, Trevor Hunt, Ben Putz, Gina Fisher, and Angie Sperfslage, playing under the team name “Fiscal
Jackhammers,” were the champions of the tournament. Kevin Fischer, a senior at Ed-Co
and a member of the champion team said, “It was a great time and I was very happy to win the tournament.
We are the first Ed-Co team to win it so I was part of history.” Pi Day Celebration by Rachel Clemen,
Special to the Echoes Pi day was celebrated at Ed-Co High School on March 12th and
the 15th in Mr. Hamann’s classroom in honor of the famous math symbol, π. March 14th is the actual day
pi is celebrated because the first three digits of pi are 3.14 but since pi day is on a Sunday, the activities had to be held the Friday before and the Monday after. In preparation of pi day, students got to choose and participate
in various activities including making a poster that involves pi, memorizing the digits of pi, essay or poetry
contest on the topic “Numbers I Have Known”, pie baking contest, researching and writing a historical report
about pi and creating a game or song pertaining to pi. “I am excited for pi day because I get to eat pie,”
Ashley Wegmann commented. Ed-Co Track Season Just Beginning by Rachel Clemen, Special to the Echoes The track season is underway as high school athletes practice and prepare for

outdoor meet will be held at West Delaware April 1st while the boys’ first outdoor meet will be on April
6th at Edgewood. Later in the season, both the boys’ and the girls’ team will run the district/regional

track season. Intro to Business Prepares Business Plans by Tara Schwietert, Special to the Echoes In the third quarter Intro to Business class, the 23 students are hard at work
creating their own business plans to “help them gain a realization as to what businesses have to go through to
start a business” said Intro to Business teacher Mrs. Ehlers. Mrs. Ehlers introduced the project by explaining
what really goes into creating a business and making it work, such as partnering with someone or others who have
similar interests and hobbies. By doing so this gave the students an opportunity to create a business that met their
interests but also made the creating process easier because the partners were able to agree and work together
to create it. The business students created a plan including the key elements of a
business plan; description of the business idea, description of their competition, marketing plan, customer analysis,
operations plan, and a financial plan. Each business plan was created based on the type of business the students
chose to create; tanning salon, laser tag arena, clothing store, psychiatric clinic, paintball arena, outdoor store, drive-in movie, and a Honda franchise. While creating the business plan, Mrs. Ehlers
informed the students that their business plans will be taken to Community Savings Bank in Edgewood where bank
personnel will look over the plans and evaluate them. This is taken into consideration for their final grade on the project. This has freshmen Rylee McDermott saying, “Taking them to the bank is a good idea because it’s
helping us to try and make the plans as realistic as possible.” Intro to Business Literacy Groups by Tara Schwietert, Special to the Echoes Mrs. Ehlers’ Intro to Business
class is taking part in literacy groups throughout the third quarter to help prepare for the amount of reading
in college that won’t include just a textbook. The books are nonfiction and have either been on the New York Times
Bestseller List or recommended by a professional business person. These books include Free the Children by Craig
Kielburger and Kevin Major, Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, Geeks by Jon Katz, Katie, com by Katherine
Tarbox, Martha: on Jail, On Trial, and On a Comback by Robert Slater. The books were assigned to the students based
on their reading level In the groups, the students have different jobs; discussion director, vocabulary finder, illustrator, and passage connector, that participate in the book discussion. The discussion director
will open the discussion by asking questions that they thought of while readinga section of the book while the
vocabulary finder will review words and their definitions. The illustrator creates or finds a picture that illustrates
the section that is being discussed and the passage connector will find passages in the reading and connect it with
things in every day life. After a book discussion is complete, the students will exchange
jobs so everyone has the opportunity to have each of the jobs throughout the quarter. At the end of the quarter,
each group will participate in a sharing session. During the sharing session the students will give a group presentation
on their book. This will include what the book was about, what they learned from reading it, and their personal opinions about the literacy. Freshmen Rachel Moser, who is reading Nickel and Dimed, said, “I really like it because
if I miss something in the reading, my group can help me understand it better.” Retiring Staff Members
at Ed-Co by Becca Thein and Natasha Vorwald There are seven great staff members
who work for the Edgewood-Colesburg school district that are retiring this year. We decided to tell you about
what they have done for Ed-Co and give you a little insight on what they are planning on doing after retirement. The first person is Mr. Hansen. Mr. Hansen has been the high school choir teacher for 32 years at Ed-Co. He has enjoyed
working with the students at Ed-Co because he thinks they are friendly. “I plan to run my computer business
full-time and to pursue my hobbies and to be outside a lot,” said Mr. Hansen. The
next person is Duane Culbertson. He has been the janitor at Ed-Co for 19 years. The things he’s going to miss
most about working at Ed-Co are all the great staff members and kids. After retiring he plans on working on his
house and getting a job. Diane Schilling has been the elementary secretary for 35 years.
“I am going to miss the interactions with the students,” said Mrs. Schilling. Schilling is already
working as a disaster volunteer for the Red Cross and hopes to do more volunteer work after retiring. She also
wants to spend more time with her grandkids. For 33 years John Ross has been the elementary
janitor. He is going to miss the kids at school. He’s not sure what he’s going to do after retiring
but he would like to find small jobs. “I enjoyed my time working here. The people are great to work with,”
said Ross. Mrs. Gatto has worked at the elementary for 19 years as the physical education
teacher. “I am going to miss all the students and the staff people they were great to work with,” said Gatto.
She doesn’t know what she’s going to do, but she plans on spending more time with her grandchildren. The next teacher is Mrs. Luker. Mrs. Luker has worked at the high school for 16 years
as the special education specialist. She is going to miss the interaction with the kids. She’s going to enjoy
life and take care of herself. Luker said, “I’ve always been proud to work at Ed-Co!”
The last person is Mr. Johnson. He has worked at Ed-Co for a total of 43 years. Ed-Co is
the only school he has ever worked at. In his time at Ed-Co he has taught conceptual sciences and a few math classes. “I’m getting near retirement age. I’ll be 64 this fall and it’s time. I don’t want
to be teaching when I’m not doing the job…it isn’t good for the kids and faculty,” stated Johnson. These seven staff members have done a lot for Ed-Co and we appreciate all of your hard
work over the years. You will be greatly missed! Students of the Week by Rachel Moser There isn't
just one student of the week this week. Mrs. Lindauer has been helping the junior class plan college activities and
three students stuck out to her. Kristy Oldfather, Kayla Kluesner, and Tosha Paul have been chosen as students
of the week. "All of these girls have been very responsible. All three have set up college visits and college
placement tests have been scheduled. The just all have a really good start to achieving future goals," said Mrs.
Lindauer.
